The Time Detective Teaser Trailer

All of the filming and the editing and the final touches have been complete. The video will be posted here once it has been uploaded to YouTube.

Soundtrack

We wasn't really sure what we wanted for the soundtrack when we started looking for music. We used the website unsignedbandweb.com to get some free music that we could use legally without breaking any copyright laws.We knew that we wanted an instrumental, as we didn't want lyrics taking over the focus of the trailer, so that is where we went looking. We downloaded several tracks so that we could listen to them with and without the trailer playing to get a feel for what the track was like. There was some discussion over whether we wanted an emotional piece or something more Sci-Fi, and eventually decided that a track called Red Shift suited the teaser trailer more, as it was upbeat, pacey and more 'techno' then some of the other tracks.

Using Garageband, Nick edited the track so that it would fit in time to the footage and then we placed it in the right place on the trailer.

Editing

When we started editing our film trailer we were using Apple iMovie HD on Mac, as this is what we had available and is the only piece of editing software we have had experience with. After piecing together most of the footage we realised that iMovie HD did not have some of the features we wanted, and felt we needed, to make a satisfactory trailer so we moved our project over to the latest version of iMovie. It took a bit of getting used to as it is so different to the version that we have always used, but we eventually found out how it all worked. We felt the text effects were better than the other version and found one that really suited our style of trailer and worked with the Sci-Fi genre, which will be seen in our finished product. The screenshot below shows iMovie while we were working on our project (click image to enlarge):

Filming

We filmed most of the shots in one day. Luckily, the actor who is playing the Time Detective has a car so we could drive to our locations with all of the equipment without much trouble. The shop was within 100 metres of the green (opening shot), and the car park was just behind the shops. The office scene, action shots and the scene where the Time Detective finds his body were all filmed in school, but made sure there were no pupils in the background or anything to give away it was in school.

We needed 2 re-shoots, which were the scene where the Time Detective finds his own body and the close-up shot of the newspaper (for which we used a body double, and filmed in a different location to the original shot). The scene where the body is discovered was hard to shoot because of the positioning of the camera and tripod with obstacles such as railings and the large depth and small width of the space we had to capture.
